What makes men’s skin different? The science may surprise you.

Jun 08, 2026

Most men assume skincare is skincare. It's one of the biggest misconceptions in the industry.

The reality is that men's skin is biologically different from women's skin in ways that directly influence hydration, oil production, ageing, sensitivity and how skincare ingredients perform on the skin.

Yet many products on the market are simply repackaged versions of existing formulations with darker packaging and a "for men" label slapped on the front.

As cosmetic chemists, we understand that men's skin behaves differently. That's why Trademark Skin was developed around the unique biological characteristics of male skin, combining advanced plant biotechnology, clinically studied actives and intelligent delivery systems to maximise performance.

Here's what makes men's skin different and why it matters.

1. Men’s Skin Is Up to 25% Thicker

Thanks to higher testosterone levels, men's skin is naturally thicker and denser than women's.

While this provides greater structural support and higher collagen density during younger years, it also creates a unique challenge: active ingredients need to effectively penetrate a thicker skin structure to deliver meaningful results.

This is one reason why basic skincare often falls short.

High-performance formulations need to be engineered not only with powerful ingredients but also with delivery systems designed to optimise absorption and efficacy.

2.  Men Produce Significantly More Oil

Men have larger sebaceous glands and can produce considerably more sebum than women.

While oil helps protect the skin barrier, excess production can contribute to:

  • Shine
  • Enlarged pores
  • Congestion
  • Breakouts
  • Uneven skin texture

The goal isn't to strip the skin.

It's to support a healthy microbiome, regulate excess oil production, and maintain optimal skin balance without compromising barrier function.

3. Men Age Later... But Faster

Men typically maintain higher collagen levels throughout early adulthood, which is why signs of ageing often appear later than in women.

However, once collagen decline begins, visible ageing can accelerate rapidly.

This often results in:

  • Deeper wrinkles
  • More pronounced expression lines
  • Reduced elasticity
  • Loss of firmness
  • Rougher skin texture

Supporting collagen production, hydration, antioxidant defence and cellular regeneration becomes increasingly important with age.

4. Shaving Is Controlled Skin Trauma

The average man shaves thousands of times throughout his lifetime.

Every shave removes not only facial hair but also a portion of the skin's protective outer layer.

Repeated shaving can contribute to:

  • Irritation
  • Redness
  • Dryness
  • Sensitivity
  • Ingrown hairs
  • Barrier disruption

Without the right skincare support, the skin can remain in a constant cycle of irritation and recovery.

5. Why We Don't Believe in Oil-Free Moisturisers

The skincare industry has spent years convincing people that all oils are bad. The science says otherwise.

Healthy skin requires both water and lipids (oils) to function properly. While hydration is essential, it is the skin's natural lipid barrier that helps lock that hydration in and protect against moisture loss.

That's why we don't formulate oil-free moisturisers.

Instead, we use carefully selected non-comedogenic oils that support the skin barrier without clogging pores or feeling heavy on the skin. The right oils help improve skin comfort, strengthen barrier function and reduce the risk of dehydration.

The goal isn't to remove oils from skincare. The goal is to use the right oils in the right way.

Trademark Skin: Formulated around men's biology

At Trademark Skin, we don't formulate products around trends. We formulate around skin biology. Understanding how men's skin functions allows us to make smarter formulation decisions that deliver better results.

Why Delivery Matters:

Great skincare isn't just about what ingredients you use. It's about whether those ingredients can actually reach the skin and do their job.

That's why our 99 Man Problems Serum was intentionally developed as a water-based formula. Many of the most effective skincare actives are water-soluble, allowing them to interact more effectively with the skin. We've also incorporated phospholipid-rich lecithin to help optimise the delivery of key actives and support absorption.

Because from our perspective as cosmetic chemists, a formula is only as good as its ability to deliver results.

Why We Chose a Water-based Serum:

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that oils automatically make a better serum.

While oils can play an important role in skincare, we deliberately chose not to use them as the foundation of our serum. Instead, we focused on creating a lightweight, water-based system designed to deliver high-performance actives without leaving a heavy or greasy residue.

For us, the goal wasn't to create an oil serum. The goal was to create the most effective serum possible.

Why Healthy Skin Needs More Than Hydration

At the same time, we don't believe healthy skin should be completely oil-free.

Skin requires both water and lipids to function optimally. Without sufficient lipid support, the skin barrier can become compromised, increasing the risk of dehydration, irritation and excess oil production.

That's why we view serums and moisturisers as playing different but equally important roles within a skincare routine.

Advanced Technology. Purposeful Formulations.

Our formulations combine advanced technologies, including:

• Plant Stem Cell Technology
• Plant-Based Peptides
• Plant-Derived PDRN
• Exosomes
• Prebiotics
• Graphene-Enhanced Delivery Systems
• Hydrating Botanical Bioactives

We don't formulate products to sound impressive. We formulate them to perform.

That means clinically studied actives, intelligent delivery systems and purposeful ingredients selected for a reason...not fillers added to make a formula look longer on paper.
